“At least I’m fucking trying. What the fuck have you done?”

“At least I’m fucking trying. What the fuck have you done?”

I’m knee deep in American Hardcore 2nd Edition by Steve Blush these days as I prepare to interview him for an upcoming feature in Library Journal’s Booksmack.  I’m really not that into hardcore music but I’m getting so much inspiration from the movement.  The whole DIY attitude that the people involved in the hardcore scene had just blows my mind.  From what I’ve read, I get this sense that they just did things and didn’t look back, building everything around them as they did it.  That’s something I can totally get behind.

The title of this post comes from Ian MacKaye, frontman for bands Minor Threat and Fugazi (just to name a few).  The moment I saw the words on the page I knew I had to write something about this.  Many times, I feel like the world gets so bogged down in planning and the little details of things and that instead of making any real change that we’re all just planning and getting nothing done.  In my head, Ian has it right.  JUST DO STUFF.

I feel like we could all change the world is we just fucking tried.

  1. Yes! And this post also makes me think of the idea of bottom-up change. Just do stuff. Systems will eventually adapt to “successful” changes, even if they come from the bottom.
