“Fidelia Hall” and “She’s The Boss EP” by Abigail Foster’s Photosynthesis Machine

Last month here in Titusville, PA at Fidelia Hall I finished recording what for now will be my final two musical projects that started and ended in the United States. Since moving to Titusville, PA in 2015 I’ve been on a bit of a creative musical tear and it has been great. A lot of neat songs and recording sessions have come from those moments and I am forever thankful. I hope you enjoy these songs and the two collections of music I have put together. I had a great time writing and recording this music.

FIDELIA HALL

Somewhere in the middle of 2018 I made some big discoveries about inspiration and creativity. Regarding inspiration, I realized that it was all around me: my family, our home, our gardens, and the life that we’ve worked hard to build and grow over all of those years was there right in front of my eyes. Things were not perfect but nothing was ever going to be perfect because that was something I could define myself. So I gave it a good look and I realized that everything that was in my life was perfect. It took 38 years to figure out this out, but I’m glad I did. It freed up my mind and my heart and allowed me to be much more present in daily life, and thanks to that I have been able to enjoy everything around me so much more. Regarding creativity, I realized that I didn’t have to set times and periods for creativity to happen. Creativity could occur at any moment and it could exist in any shape it decided to take. It could come and go and exist only in that moment in time or it could be recorded and enjoyed for as long as that recording existed.

The iPhone helped the inspiration and creativity that was all around me be captured in the moment. Apps like Music Memos and Garageband may seem silly and useless but to me they were the tools that were at my disposal during these times. Instead of pushing both of those tools aside for fear that they were silly or not professional enough, I embraced them because I realized it was better to capture that inspiration and creativity in any way possible instead of letting it fade away forever. I hit record, I performed what was in my head and heart, and I put it all together in the four albums that you will hear about below. I had a great time thinking about all of this and putting it together for everyone to enjoy. It was for sure a challenge but one that I welcomed.

In late December 2018 my family and I made the move into the 146 year old former church turned our home/community space/recording studio space that we dubbed “Fidelia Hall”. This project was something we started way back in mid 2015 and while not completely finished (is anything ever finished?) we reached a point where we could move out of our former location and into the new space. Almost immediately there was a change in all of us. We were happier, healthier, and more present in the moment. Fidelia Hall was our home but it was so much more than that. It was an idea that brought family and community together, an idea that allowed creativity to flourish, an idea that encompassed all parts of the life that we built over the years. From the restored tin ceiling to the gardens full of borage and then people that found themselves enjoying life while visiting Fidelia Hall, everything about the project came together and was a great source of inspiration for me. My time living at Fidelia Hall will always remain in my heart as one that was full of love.

SHE’S THE BOSS EP

Over the course of a year, I continued to tweak my ideas and build upon the idea of capturing everything creative that came out of my head and heart. At one point I thought this would be my chance to put together something similar to one of my favorite albums of all time, The Beatles White Album. There were more than enough songs and just a year before all of these songs came together I had developed quite an obsession around what that album was and it could have been (for an example of my obsession listen to this). I honestly got overwhelmed when it came to the idea of putting together a 30 plus song album just so I could say that I had my own White Album so I passed on that idea after a while.

The four songs on the SHE’S THE BOSS EP were tunes that did not fit onto the FIDELIA HALL album but I knew they should be released in some form. I put together this EP as I finished the tracklist sequencing for FIDELIA HALL. There were a few other songs floating around that could’ve made it onto this collection and turned it into a full album, but the EP format worked much better for the feel of the collection. It was really a great experience finally getting to record with my friend Daniel Stockwell. He played some great banjo on She’s The Boss and it really took the song to the next level.
